Trivia: Among the changes necessitated by the death of Oliver Reed was the final scene, as it was supposed to have been Proximo who buried the figures in the sand of the Coliseum.

Goofs: Factual errors: Roman generals usually didn’t ride with the cavalry or engage in physical combat. The number of men on the battlefield in Germania appeared to be a cohort, 1/10th of a legion, which would have been commanded by several Centurions, and Optios. A legion was commanded by a Legatus. An army ( than one legion) was commanded by a general. Generals also had their own Praetorian guard; Maximus’ is conspicuously absent.
